KOTA KINABALU, March 24 — Sabah state lawmaker Datuk Mohd Suhaili Said died at a private hospital in Kuala Lumpur today. He was 56.

The Tungku assemblyman breathed his last at about 3.10pm, according to assistant minister in the Chief Minister’s department Datuk Arifin Arif.

“I was told by his brother Muhamad Ghazali Said that Allahyarham YB Datuk Suhaili Said passed away just now. Our prayers and condolences go out to him,” Arifin said in a Facebook post.

It was learnt that Suhaili’s wife Datin Dayang Sofia Datu Jamiuddin was by his side when he died.

National news agency Bernama reported Suhaili died of liver cancer. He was believed to have been suffering from liver problems for a while now and was admitted to the hospital three days ago.

His body will be flown back to Tungku, Lahad Datu as soon as possible for burial at the Kampung Remang Muslim burial grounds.

Suhaili was also chairman of the Sabah Islamic Religious Council.

The Tungku seat will likely remain vacant until the next state election, which is due to be called by June next year, the same time as the 14th general elections.
