KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 16 ― PAS Spiritual Adviser Datuk Dr Haron Din died today at the Stanford University Hospital in California, the party's information chief Nasrudin Hassan confirmed.

In a statement, Nasrudin said Haron passed away at 10.10am Malaysian time.

Haron was undergoing treatment there for a heart problem. He was reported to be in a critical condition earlier and went into a coma about 2am Malaysian time, and later placed on life support.

Born in Perlis on August 18, 1940, Haron became PAS spiritual adviser early last year when Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat died of cancer on February 12, 2015. Nik Aziz had been the party’s spiritual rock since 1991.

Haron was also appointed by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi as chief of the missionary cluster under the federal Islamic Consultative Council last February.

He had also been the deputy dean of the Islamic Studies Faculty at the National University of Malaysia and sat on the Shariah advisory panels of Bank Negara Malaysia, CIMB and the Securities Commission, among others.

Haron is survived by his wife Datin Khatijah Din and five children.
