KUALA LUMPUR, June 10 ― City police will be conducting special operations to crack down on football betting beginning today for the Euro 2016 football championship, tomorrow in France.
Kuala Lumpur CID chief SAC Rusdi Mohd Isa when contacted by Bernama today said, the operations would be carried out until the end of the tournament, where it culminates on July 10.
Without revealing the 'hot' locations of the gambling activities and the numbers of the members of the police involved, Rusdi said monitoring and surveillance have begun in recent weeks to combat the illegal activity.
He said so far no arrests had been made but warned stern action would be taken against individuals who involved either as members of the syndicate or gamblers in illegal gambling activities EURO 2016.
For the record, police detained about 100 football bookies and seized bets estimated at RM50 million in special operations codenamed “Ops Soga” nationwide in conjunction with the Euro 2012 in Poland and Ukraine.
France will host the 15th edition of the tournament matches which will be held in 10 stadiums ― Bordeaux, Lens, Lille, Lyon, Marseille, Nice, Paris, Saint-Denis, Saint-Etienne and Toulouse.
For the first time, this year, the tournament will be contested by 24 teams, having been expanded from the 16-team format used since 1996. ― Bernama
