GEORGE TOWN, June 8 — Penang police have uncovered a drug processing laboratory and detained a couple believed to have been involved in processing RM1.2 million worth of drugs at an apartment in Sungai Ara on Monday.

In the operation, police seized several types of drugs including 3,838 ecstasy pills, 8.7 kilogrammes of ecstasy powder, 300 grams of ketamine, 75 grams of caffeine, 105 grams of syabu, ganja, and drugs processing equipment in the apartment which was used as a laboratory.

Penang Police Deputy Chief Datuk A.Thaiveegan said the couple, aged 31 and 31 years, were believed to have been carrying out their illegal activities for almost a year.

“The operation was carried out following the man’s arrest for possessing syabu weighing 12.5 grams in the Relau area at about 3am on the same day, and upon questioning, the suspect took the police to his home where they found all these drugs,” he told reporters here today.

During the operation, Thaiveegan said police also detained the couple’s children but they have been released and given to the couple’s relatives.

“Initial investigations by the police found that the drugs was for the local market and the couple who ware jobless will be remanded,” he said. — Bernama
