KUALA LUMPUR, June 17 ― Local celebrity chef Datuk Redzuawan Ismail, better known as Chef Wan here, disagreed today with a recent ranking of world’s best food destination that placed Malaysia at sixth place.

According to Chef Wan, the ranking by international news agency CNN, should have placed Malaysia at the top for the varieties and flavours of its cuisine, according to a report by news portal Astro Awani.

“My top five choices in terms of variety should be: number one Malaysia, followed by Italy, Thailand, Japan and India,” Chef Wan told Astro Awani.

“I see food as varieties and flavours that reflect the culture and food, and that is why Malaysia should be the first world’s best food destination.”.

The ranking was determined by CNN’s readers’ votes in a public poll on its Facebook page, with Taiwan topping the chart with 8,242 votes.

At second place is the Philippines with 1,528 votes, a result that received scorn from Chef Wan who claimed the republic should have been right at the bottom.

“Philippines is known to have the worst food in Asia, ask any chefs and they will tell you I am right," said the chef.

After Taiwan and the Philippines, the list ranked Italy, Thailand and Japan above Malaysia, while making up the rest of the list were Hong Kong, India, Greece and Vietnam.
