IPOH, June 2 — Perak recorded the highest arrest for drug-related offences in the country, totalling 5,179 people, between January and May this year, said State Deputy Police Chief Datuk A. Paramasivam.
The number, he said, showed an increase of 1,136 people from the corresponding period last year.
He said of the 5,179 people, 836 of them were for drug trafficking and 4,267 were drug addicts, against 531 and 3,458, respectively, during the same period last year.
The remaining 75 people were arrested under the Dangerous Drugs (Special Preventive Measures) Act 1985, he said at the handing over of duty by Acting Perak Narcotic Criminal Investigation Department head Supt Mohd Nasri Omar to ACP Yap Toon Khuan.
Yap, who is formerly the Pahang Narcotic Criminal Investigation Department head, takes over as the new Perak Narcotic Criminal Investigation Department head, effective today.
Following the arrest, 218,227 grammes of drugs were seized, compared with 358,736.33 grammes in the corresponding period last year.
Property worth RM1.2 million belonging to drug traffickers had also been sealed this year.
Meanwhile, Yap said integrated operations, involving all departments in the state police contingent, would continue to be conducted every as part of an effort to eliminate drug-related offences. — Bernama
