GEORGE TOWN, Oct 20 ― This year's Urban Xchange Festival will see more than six murals and sculptures located around George Town and Butterworth.

The two-week streets art festival kicks off on October 31 and will showcase work by nine Malaysian and six foreign artists.

Other works, especially the Artisan Project, will be displayed in the Hin Bus Depot.

“This year, we have more local artists participating as compared to last year's UX,” said festival curator Gabija Grusaite.

She said they are still finalising locations for some of the public murals and sculptures.

“Malaysian artist Louise Low will be creating a floating sculpture as part of her series of broken mirror installations,” she said.

Y.E.S. or Jesus Moreno of Spain will paint his signature colourful work along Magazine Road while TwoOne of Japan will be painting an animal character along Stewart Lane.

Nafir from Iran and Sabek from Spain, both of whom who participated in UX 2014, are back this year to paint their murals along Jalan Raja Uda in Butterworth.

Other than the street art and the Artisan Project that focuses on combining traditional trades with contemporary art, there will also be art talk sessions curated by Winston Liew.

On November 1, five artists including Ong Jun Hao, AWK, Tan Wei Ming and Low Chee Peng will be sharing their experiences in an UX Artist Sharing Session at Hin Bus Depot.

A week after that, on November 8, there will be a UX Panel Discussion on Art Matters, also curated by Liew.

“It is a dialogue session to discuss the value of art, what is worth funding and the relevance of art to Penang's culture,” Liew said.

Representatives from Think City, George Town Festival, George Town World Heritage Incorporated and Penang Global Tourism have been invited to the dialogue.

“UX now has a newsletter with information of participating artists and events planned for the festival so the public can easily get to know more about the festival,” Grusaite said.
