KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 24 — Datuk Subahan Kamal is the new FA of Selangor (FAS) president.
The elections were brought forward a year after former president, Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Azmin Ali quit unceremoniously in December.
The announcement was made yesterday when FAS had their Executive General Meeting in Shah Alam.
Subahan is no stranger to football having been involved with the game for almost two decades.
There are however concerns regarding his capabilities to run the much-maligned FAS as he also heads the Malaysian Hockey Confederation (MHC).
“People always ask me this question,” said Subahan.
“So let me make things clear. My heart bleeds Selangor. As president my job is to set the ideas, vision and mission whilst working closely with the team to achieve set goals.
“I wouldn’t contest if I felt I could not perform, and I am extremely confident in my abilities to carry out my duties.
“We are the poorest football state in the country as we don’t have backing from the state government. My immediate target is to avoid relegation and start afresh next year.”
Despite all the troubles, Selangor are doing well and fourth in the Super League. They are playing with a mix of youths and experienced players which is coming to fruition nicely.
“We’re going to get our finances in order and it is one of our top priorities,” said the 52-year-old Subahan.
“We’ve had enough of infighting. The key is to move on and hopefully by next year we’ll be on a more stable platform.
“I also hope the fans rally behind us.”
Office bearers sit for a term of four years.
However, Subahan is not sure how long he will be in office, but said one term is enough time for him to set in place a platform for the future of Selangor football.
The committee and Subahan vowed not to get involved in footballing matters and will leave it to coach P Maniam and his coaching staff.
