SINGAPORE, June 11 — Malaysia’s men’s and women’s squash teams were in sizzling form to whitewash their opponents in their respective Pool A matches at Kallang Squash Centre here today.
The women beat Thailand 3-0 while the men scored a similar victory over the Philippines.
Women’s singles gold medallist Rachel Arnold demolished A. Prasertratanakul 11-3, 11-3, 11-6 before Teh Min Jie secured Malaysia’s second point after defeating Tuddaw Thamronglarb 11-2, 11-5, 11-0. Zulhijjah Azan then sealed the winning point for Malaysia after edging Panisa Suwanarat 11-5, 11-4, 11-0 in the third match.
The men’s team spearheaded by Sanjay Singh Chal, winner of the men’s singles gold medal yesterday, disposed David W. Pelino 11-1, 11-0, 11-5 while men’s singles silver medal winner Mohd Syafiq Mohd Kamal faced stiff resistance from Ricky Espinola before securing a 11-6, 13-11, 11-1 win and Valentino Bong wrapped up the win after gunning down Robert A. Garcia 11-5, 11-7, 11-0.
The Malaysian women’s team will meet Myanmar while the men’s squad will take on Thailand in the final Pool A matches, tomorrow.
For the record, Malaysia had already won both the men’s and women’s singles gold medals yesterday. — Bernama
