KUALA LUMPUR, May 31 — DAP chairman Lim Guan Eng today urged Penangites to lodge police reports against Kedah Menteri Besar Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor for his recent claims that have created public disaffection and attempted to cause enmity between the residents of the two states.
He said that the claim made by Sanusi that Penang still belongs to Kedah has been refuted not only by the 1.8 million residents of Penang but also by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Ramkarpal Singh.
“Police reports should be lodged by 1.8 million Penangites to press for action against Muhammad Sanusi to protect Penang and prevent ‘political interlopers’ from invading our state to ensure that we can continue our lives peacefully and enjoy prosperity.
“By provoking and questioning Penang’s sovereignty and right to exist as a state, Muhammad Sanusi is a public danger to the peace and security of the nation,” he said in a statement here.
Despite the clear facts and legal framework that contradict his claims, he said that Sanusi refuses to retract or apologise for his statements.
He also said that Anwar pointed out that even the Sultan of Kedah did not dispute Penang's right to exist as a state, as the Sultan had consented to the Federal Constitution which recognises Penang as one of the 13 sovereign states in Malaysia.
“This is not the first time that Muhammad Sanusi has made such baseless and false claims against Penang. Previously, Muhammad Sanusi publicly expressed doubts about Penang's sovereignty and its right to exist, suggesting that Penang should be under Kedah's jurisdiction.
“In response, the Penang state assembly unanimously passed a motion condemning Muhammad Sanusi for questioning Penang's sovereignty, with the support of the lone Penang PAS assemblyman,” he said.
The Bagan MP also said that it is evident that Sanusi is using these false claims to gain political advantage in the upcoming state elections.
He added that Penang PAS, an Islamist political party that Muhammad Sanusi represents should also be called upon to clarify their stance regarding his claims.
“Should they fail to do so, then PAS should not contest in the coming state elections if they cannot fully represent the interests of Penangites as well as defend, protect and preserve the Federal Constitution,” he said.
On May 29, Sanusi said that Kedah and Penang do not have a border because Penang still belongs to Kedah, claiming further that Kedah only shares a border with Perak and Perlis.
