KUALA LUMPUR, May 23 — MIC Youth threw its full support behind Dewan Negara president Tan Sri SA Vigneswaran to become the party's next MIC president, expressing hope that the top post would not see any contest.

Its chief, Datuk C. Sivarrajh, said that this does not mean the movement would oppose to any contest, only that it wished to see MIC regroup as quickly as possible.

"I have already discussed with my Youth leadership and the decision of MIC Youth is to support him (Vigneswaran) as president, because Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam said that he won't be contesting in the next party election.

“If possible, I hope we can have an agreement in the party, so that there is no contest for the (president's) post, because I feel he is qualified, and I believe he can bring a good change for the party.

"At the same time, we don't oppose anyone from contesting, but I believe given the situation now,  we need to have a union and support, to give someone to lead this party at a challenging time like this," Sivarrajh told a press conference here.

Vigneswaran last week expressed his intention to contest for the party's presidency.

Vigneswaran, 51, was appointed senator on June 23, 2014, and took his oath as the 17th Dewan Negara president in 2016.

He holds a law degree from Staffordshire University.
