KOTA KINABALU, Oct 25 — The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) is expected to soon complete the separation and perusal of important documents seized under an operation, ‘Ops Water’ which began on Oct 4.
MACC deputy chief commissioner Datuk Azam Baki said the MACC officers involved would take at least 12 hours to separate the documents.
He said processing the documents involved at least 20 officers on a daily basis.
“We are trying to settle processing the documents soon to enable MACC to take the investigation to be next level,” he told Bernama when contacted today.
It was understood the documents confiscated in a series of raids since the first day on Oct 4, could fill up half a hall — or the size of a tennis court.
Azam said to assist the investigation team complete separating the documents fast, MACC might need to deploy more officers from the headquarters in Putrajaya and several other states.
“We believe more evidence will be uncovered from studying documents relating to misappropriation of infrastructure funds of the government department,” he added.
He also told all parties to give MACC the fullest cooperation, as well as not to make any speculation as the investigating team needed time to study the case thoroughly.
On October 4, MACC launched ‘Ops Water I’ and detained four senior officers of the government department here, including its director and deputy director, to assist in investigations on irregularities of the funds.
Following that, four suspects were detained, and MACC seized more than RM114 million and 127 land grants and jewelleries. However, the four suspects were released on bail ranging between RM50,000 and RM500,000 in two sureties.
‘Ops Water II’ was launched after MACC suspected more officers from the department were involved in the misappropriation, based on the investigations conducted on the officers detained earlier. — Bernama
