MELAKA, Sept 20 ― The Bukit Katil Umno Division today requested the Election Commission to review the redelineation of the electoral boundary for the parliamentary constituency of the same name.
Its chairman, Tan Sri Mohd Ali Rustam, said the recommended redelineation would ‘relocate’ the major Bachang and Peringgit polling districts to the Kota Melaka parliamentary constituency.
“If this happens, the Bukit Katil parliamentary constituency which has about 105,000 voters will lose more than 10,000 voters in the two polling districts,” he told a press conference in Bandar Hilir here.
Mohd Ali, who is a senator, also proposed that the EC add two or three more state constituencies to the Bukit Katil parliamentary constituency under the redelineation exercise.
Bukit Katil currently has within it four states seats, namely Bachang, Ayer Keroh, Bukit Baru and Ayer Molek.
In the last general election, in 2013, Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin of PKR won the Bukit Katil seat by beating Mohd Ali with a majority of 5,447 votes.
It had been reported that Bukit Katil would be a hot seat in the next general election.
Mohd Ali also hit out at the opposition political parties for allegedly claiming that the EC redelineation exercise favoured certain quarters.
“The opposition has always cited conspiracy in the redelineation exercise, but the EC is only doing its job based on the rules and provisions of the Federal Constitution,” he said. ― Bernama
