KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 21 — The Federal Territories Ministry is proposing trams as a cheaper mass transportation system to the monorail to cater to the growing population in the federal administrative capital of Putrajaya and neighbouring Cyberjaya.

Its minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor said the government hopes to build and get the tram infrastructure going within the next three years, state news agency Bernama reported today.

“Recently, we discussed with the National Economic Council and we see the development of trams as a solution to the monorail project that has stalled, and it is cheaper,” he was quoted telling reporters after officiating a Family Day event in Putrajaya earlier.

The Putrajaya MP also said he was confident the Economic Planning Unit will soon open a “Request for Proposal” to companies interested to build the tram system.

According to the Bernama report, plans to build an 18km long monorail for Putrajaya hit a bump and was suspended in 2014 due to lack of funds.
