KUALA LUMPUR, March 14 — Malaysian Bar vice-president from the previous term Steven Thiru was elected today as the new president of the professional legal body.
George Varughese was elected as vice-president and Karen Cheah is the new secretary.
“I’m the new president of the Malaysian Bar,” Steven told a press conference after the Malaysian Bar’s 69th annual general meeting (AGM) here today.
Abdul Fareed Abdul Gafoor was elected treasurer.
Steven replaces Christopher Leong as president after the latter served a maximum term of two years.
Steven said a record 1,906 members attended the AGM today.
He added that a record 12 motions were tabled for the AGM, including one to censure lawyer Tan Sri Muhd Shafee Abdullah over his allegedly questionable conduct after the Federal Court convicted Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim of sodomy and another to censure Leong over his statement questioning Anwar's prosecution.
The motion against Shafee was not debated as the Umno-linked lawyer secured a court injunction barring this, while the Malaysian Bar overwhelmingly rejected the motion against Leong.
