KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 23 — The number of evacuees in flood relief centres in Sabah and Sarawak dropped this evening, but that in Kelantan and Perak remained unchanged.

In Sabah, the number of evacuees in the two flood-hit districts dropped to 3,505 this evening from 4,636 in the afternoon.

Beaufort district officer Mohd Shahid Othman said the number of evacuees at five relief centres in the district had dropped to 674 from 206 families compared to 1,513 from 491 families this afternoon.

Membakut assistant district officer Sarudin Ismail said the number of evacuees at five relief centres in the sub-district had reduced to 2,831 from 766 families compared to 2,992 from 817 families this afternoon.

In Sarawak, the number of evacuees dropped to 2,846 this evening from 3,250 this afternoon.

A spokesman of the Sarawak National Security Council (NSC) said all the evacuees were being housed at 13 relief centres, with 1,300 in Limbang, 1,215 in Samarahan, 244 in Miri and 87 in Mukah.

Meanwhile, 30 schools remained closed due to the floods, 11 of them in the Daro district, nine in Limbang, four in Serian, three in Sibu and one each in Miri, Mukah and Padawan.

In Kelantan, 255 evacuees from 62 families are being housed at eight relief centres in Kuala Krai.

A spokesman of the Kelantan NSC said the evacuees were being accommodated in school halls, factories and mosques as their houses had been badly damaged or washed away by the floodwaters.

In Perak, the number of evacuees remained at 77 from 18 families. They are being housed at two relief centres, one in the Perak Tengah district (with 43 evacuees) and the other in Hilir Perak (34). — Bernama
