KUALA LUMPUR, June 29 — Otters are a fragile species whose survival is critical to ensure a balanced ecosystem.
In the fourth episode of Borneo Jungle Diaries webseries, Sabahan Leona Wai demonstrates how the carnivorous species controls the population of their prey.
Wai takes show’s host — Aaron “Bertie” Gekoski – on tour of an otter den to study the mammals’ ecology.
“Otters also play an important role in the ecotourism industry. Their adorable appearance and playful behaviour makes people love to watch them,” Wai said.
Wai, who is a member of the IUCN Otter Specialist Group (OSG), pointed that they were unique as they were one of few animals that mate for life.
She said it was important to ascertain the exact species populating Borneo so scientists could establish a conservation management plan for the otters.
There are four known otter species in the Borneo, particularly Sabah, including the near extinct hairy-nosed and Eurasian otter species.
