SINGAPORE, June 15 — In an awards ceremony on Monday in New York City, Restaurant Andre took the No 32 spot becoming Singapore’s best performer on the lauded The World’s 50 Best Restaurants 2016 list.

This is its highest placing, up from No 46 last year. Restaurant Andre is also the only Singapore restaurant to figure on the top 50 list.

(Another Singapore restaurant, Burnt Ends, landed on the No 70 spot in the World’s 100 Best Restaurants 2016 list.)

“The year already started full of wonderful surprises; we were so proud to have been awarded Best Restaurant in Singapore as well as reaching the top three of the Asia’s Best Restaurants ranking,” said chef-owner Andre Chiang in a statement.

This marks a remarkable year for the Taiwanese chef and his six-year-old restaurant. The results follow the launch of Chiang’s first cookbook in his culinary career called Octaphilosophy: The Eight Elements Of Restaurant Andre, which documents and illustrates his creations over 365 days.

In a thank you letter, the chef said: “The result of the World’s 50 Best Restaurants list fills us with happiness and endless gratitude. It is a great pleasure to compose a new menu every single service together with my brigade. I enjoy sharing with you my passion ... as well as delivering the best culinary experience to you, my dearest guests.”

Six restaurants from Asia feature on the list this year with Narisawa in Tokyo being the highest placed establishment, holding on to the No 8 position. Other top performers from the region include Gaggan (No 23) in Bangkok; Nihonryori RyuGin (No 31) in Tokyo; Nahm (No 37) in Bangkok; and Ultraviolet by Paul Pairet (No 42) in Shanghai. — TODAY
