SINGAPORE, Oct 28 — A 32-year-old man accused of multiple counts of child abuse, including choking a baby and hanging him on a hanger inside a cupboard, has changed his legal representation.

As reported by CNA, the Singaporean, who cannot be named due to a gag order, faces charges classified as domestic violence.

The accused was previously represented by Gino Hardial Singh, who was discharged as counsel at a further mention on October 15.

At a pre-trial conference yesterday, lawyers Amarick Singh Gill and S Ramanujen appeared on behalf of the accused.

A pre-trial conference is a private hearing before a judge where both sides discuss administrative matters before open court proceedings. Such hearings may address procedural issues and do not necessarily mean a trial will take place.

The man was charged in September over alleged abuse of a baby in his care at a flat in July and August last year, when the child was between nine and 11 months old.

According to CNA, the man is facing more than 30 charges detailing acts such as stepping on the baby’s face, choking and suffocating him, pushing his head into a pail of water, and hanging him inside a cupboard by his singlet.

One charge alleges that on September 16, 2024, the man twisted the boy’s arms, punched his face, shook his head, and dragged him by the neck along a table.

The next pre-trial conference is set for November 24, and each charge under the Children and Young Persons Act carries a possible sentence of up to eight years’ jail, a fine of up to S$8,000 (RM25,950), or both.
