KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 21 — The University of Hong Kong (HKU) will be conferring screen goddess Brigitte Lin Ching-hsia with an honourary degree during its congregation on November 2.

Joining the 67-year-old Taiwanese for the momentous moment are theoretical physicist Chen Ning Yang and chairman of Hong Kong Ferry (Holdings) Colin Lam Ko Yin.

While Chen will be conferred the Doctor of Science, Lin and Lam will be awarded the Doctor of Social Sciences.

In a statement issued through its website, HKU said the honorary degrees are awarded to individuals to recognise their distinguished service and commitment to the university, the community and to academia.

They are also conferred on those who have made valuable intellectual, social and cultural contributions to society and the world.

Lin, who is a mother of two daughters, joined the film industry in 1972 and rose to stardom with her screen debut Outside the Window the following year.

She has since appeared in 100 movies ranging from romantic dramas, comedies to martial arts films.

Her last film was Ashes of Time in 1994 which was directed by Wong Kar-wai.

Following her retirement from showbiz, Lin, who is married to Hong Kong businessman Micheal Ying, has moved on to be a writer. To date, she has published four works Outside the Window (2011); Cloud Goes, Cloud Comes (2014); In Front of and Behind the Mirror (2020) and Ching-hsia Sketches (2022).

Her third book In Front of and Behind the Mirror was selected for the Recommended Prize in the essay category at the 16th Hong Kong Biennial Awards for Chinese Literature in 2022.
