PETALING JAYA, Dec 12 — December 10 now holds a special meaning for singer Dasha Logan.

This was when her first single Cleverly soared to No. 1 on the UK soul charts. The daughter of  Datuk Loganathan Arumugam, co-lead vocalist of the popular group Alleycats, is besides herself with this life-changing moment.

“I have always linked my birthday, on December 17, to Christmas and New Year. But now I will remember December 10 as the anniversary of the day my song reached No. 1,” she said.

“It feels like it’s my birthday and I just don’t know what to do with myself. No. 1? What?”

The bubbly Dasha said she never expected the single to reach the position, adding she was happy enough Cleverly had made it to any chart.

“It’s insane. I got a hint on Sunday but for some reason, it didn’t ‘refresh’ on the chart’s official page until Wednesday night. Against my friends and family’s wishes, I refused to do any celebrating until I had visual proof. Otherwise, no one might believe me.”

The exhilarated 26-year-old said she was at Chin Woo Stadium in Kuala Lumpur waiting to perform at a function when she received the phone call confirming that she had topped the chart.

“It took me about three hours to calm down. Fortunately, I was able to compose myself and perform for an hour,” she said.

“Of course my friends at Area Boy Music, the United Kingdom label that owns the single, have been celebrating since last Friday night.”

Her mother Datin Susie Lovie and her brother Vigneshwaran have been receiving endless congratulatory calls as well, she said, adding that her brother had been teasing her over which “online dress” she wanted for her birthday.

“Mum has been calling me almost every hour.”

Dasha said while she did not have a bucket list, her dream was to be on a large stage with flashing lights and fans singing along with her.

On whether she had been invited to England to perform, she said she had not but had carried out many radio interviews via Skype and telephone.

Next on her list is to release her second single Leave Your Man early next year while trying to remain on the charts for as long as she can.

Besides Dasha, another Malaysian singer-songwriter, Gerard Singh, is making waves in the United States by hitting No. 40 on the Billboard Mainstream Top 40 Indicator Chart.

The Lakefront Recording artiste released his debut single 'Crazy' in September. The single has steadily climbed the charts, making him the first Malaysian from a Malaysian record label to reach this position.

He debuted at No. 82 and the single is now up against singles from artistes like Maroon 5, Jason Derulo and Kendrick Lamar.

“This song is a reflection of having to deal with the disappointment of not getting the support I want from the people, especially the ones closest to me — the ones I would expect the most support from,” he said.
