KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 4 — The Malaysian Employers Federation (MEF) president Datuk Syed Hussain Husman has been elected as a member of the International Labour Organisation (ILO) Governing Body for the 2023/2024 term.

In a statement today, Syed Hussain said his appointment would help put MEF in a better position to assist Malaysian employers in coping with the changing business ecosystem at the regional and global stage as part and parcel of the need for business sustainability training and education for employers.

“Employers must embark on a policy of inclusivity with zero tolerance to discrimination and unfair labour practices, thus building trust between employers and workers for business sustainability,” he said in the statement released by MEF.

Syed Hussain also said his nomination as Deputy Member representing employers to the executive body of the ILO, which was made through a nomination by the International Organisations of Employers (IOE), serves as a recognition of MEF works in representing employers’ interests.

“MEF is actively collaborating with the ILO to raise awareness and build the capacity of employers in Malaysia in dealing with emerging national, regional and international issues,” he added.

According to the statement, the ILO’s mission is to advance social and economic justice by setting international labour standards with its governing body composed of 56 titular members and 66 deputy members, which makes decisions on ILO policy.

Founded in October 1919 under the League of Nations headquarters, the ILO is one of the first and oldest specialised agencies of the United Nations. — Bernama
