PETALING JAYA, Aug 14 — The Election Commission (EC) has not ruled out the possibility of introducing online or electronic voting in Malaysia in the future.
According to Berita Harian (BH), EC chairman Datuk Seri Ramlan Harun said the proposal would however, require thorough study, particularly in terms of public trust and confidence in such a system.
He explained that several critical aspects must be considered, including cybersecurity, the integrity of the electoral process, ballot secrecy, infrastructure readiness and potential legislative amendments.
“The EC is examining the possibility of implementing e voting before it is introduced in Malaysia. Among the matters being reviewed are the experiences of other countries, current technological developments, system security and integrity, as well as the level of public readiness,” he told BH.
General elections are held when Parliament or a state assembly is dissolved, while by elections take place to fill unexpected vacancies.
On polling day, registered voters cast their ballots at designated centres between 8am and 6pm in Peninsular Malaysia, and from 7.30am to 5.30pm in Sabah and Sarawak.
