KUALA LUMPUR, May 21 — The ringgit closed higher today on renewed buying interest due to low risk appetite for the US dollar, a dealer said. At 5pm, the ringgit was quoted at 3.2130/2150 against the greenback from 3.2190/2220 yesterday.
The dealer said emerging currencies including the ringgit gained favour as weaker-than-expected retail earnings data in the United States curbed buying for the greenback.
“The positive sentiment lifted by the strong first-quarter gross domestic product result also helped boost demand for the local unit,” she said.
Against other major currencies, the ringgit was traded mostly lower. It went down versus the yen to 3.1824/1857 from 3.1767/1810, and against the British pound it declined to 5.4316/4359 from 5.4169/4223 yesterday.
The local note also weakened to 4.4060/4094 from 4.4049/4093 against the euro, but rose against the Singapore dollar to 2.5661/5695 from 2.5690/5716. — Bernama
