SHAH ALAM, Aug 23 — Azmin Ali urged all parties today to give the Selangor Sultan enough room to decide who should be Selangor mentri besar before they move to pick an alternative candidate.

The PKR deputy president, who has himself earned PAS’s endorsement for the coveted post, said although there are many opinions being formed on who would be fit to be MB, the state ruler has not had the opportunity to deliberate on the matter yet.

“We should give room to High Highness to decide, don’t make all sorts of assumptions.

“This is the problem, we are prejudging His Highness, the Sultan is (just) one (person) so don’t let so many people try and be his spokesmen,” he told reporters here.

But Azmin later admitted that Pakatan Rakyat (PR) will have to rely on the 30 statutory declarations in support of Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail to determine the pact’s majority in the Selangor assembly as the remaining 13 PAS assemblymen have still refrained from signing any letter of support.

“Thirty SDs have been sent to the palace. Till today PAS has not signed the SD,” he said.

“There is no plan B, we just have to wait,” Azmin said.

Including PAS, PR has 43 assemblymen in the 53-seat Selangor assembly.

PAS is refusing to officially endorse Dr Wan Azizah PR’s sole Selangor mentri besar candidate, despite the coalition having previously reached a consensus on the matter.

Malay Mail Online understands that PKR and DAP have drafted an official letter in support of Dr Wan Azizah to be submitted to the Selangor palace as proof that she commands support from all PR lawmakers in Selangor.

The letter was supposed to have been signed by secretary-generals from all three parties, as per PR’s agreement on Dr Wan Azizah’s candidacy as MB on August 17.

But the clock is now ticking for PR, as PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang has so far refused to consent to the signing of the letter.

Also, at the same time party leaders have been informed that MB Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim is expected to meet the Selangor Sultan this coming Monday.

It is understood that Hadi is still insisting that two names be submitted as Selangor MB candidates, despite PKR’s Azmin Ali stating earlier he would give way to Dr Wan Azizah.

The source said that Dr Wan Azizah may now have no other choice but to rely on the support of the 30 assemblyman (28 from PKR, DAP and two from PAS) as proof of her commanding support of the Selangor state assembly.

MB Khalid was sacked from PKR on August 9 for openly resisting his party’s order for him to step down and make way for Dr Wan Azizah.
