KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 19 — Lembah Pantai incumbent Fahmi Fadzil took the Election Commission (EC) to task, alleging poor management at a polling station in his urban constituency that he said lacked even the basic notices telling voters where they should go to cast their ballots.
In a video uploaded by Malay newspaper Harian Metro this afternoon, a visibly incensed Fahmi said that even the policemen on duty had turned to him, asking if he could provide some chairs for the elderly voters.
“You know, they don't even have proper lanes! The police are coming to me, asking me if I have chairs. I can't solve this problem, it's the EC!” he said.
He asked the EC why it chose to turn an open field at the Kerinchi People’s Housing Programme (PPR) flats into a polling station.
“EC chairman, this is on you. If anyone collapses today at the Kerinchi PPR football field, you will be the one to bear the sin! Ridiculous! People are angry. Why are you treating the electorates this way? Don't you feel a sense of responsibility?” he asked.
He called the EC officials to check the situation for themselves.
Fahmi is seeking a second-term in Lembah Pantai after winning it for Pakatan Harapan in Election 2018.
He is facing off against Barisan Nasional’s Datuk Ramlan Askolani, Pejuang’s Dr Noor Asmah Mohd Razali and Perikatan Nasional's Fauzi Abu Bakar.
According to the latest figures just released by the EC, 50 per cent of eligible voters have cast their ballots across Malaysia as of 1pm today. This is the equivalent of 10.4 million votes cast so far.
The voter turnout in the 2018 election was 82 per cent, and 84 per cent in 2013.
At the last election in 2018, there were 14.9 million voters.
