GEORGE TOWN, Jan 12 — Penang will have the first international university in the state after University of Wollongong (UOW) decided to open its branch campus in Batu Kawan at Seberang Perai Selatan this year.
KDU Penang University College Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic and Research), Dr Brian C. Imrie said UOW, an Australian public university in New South Wales, has entered into share agreement to purchase 65 per cent of KDU University College in Glenmarie, Shah Alam; KDU Penang University College (65 per cent) and KDU College in Damansara, Petaling Jaya (70 per cent).
“In addition the agreement provides for full acquisition of these institutions in the years to come. It is the first foreign institution within Penang state,” he told reporters after the officiating of Evolve Final Year Exhibition 2019 by Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow here today. The event was organised by KDU Penang University College.
He said at the moment, the university is expecting approval by the Ministry of Education in the next few months and the branch campus in Batu Kawan was scheduled to be ready in September this year.
Meanwhile, Chow welcomed the announcement and and said the state government was looking forward to the opening of the new campus. — Bernama
