KUALA LUMPUR, May 30 — Badminton player Datuk Lee Chong Wei is no longer a director of the company linked to Raj’s Banana Leaf and had quit the post before a viral incident of dishwashing by the drain, the restaurant clarified tonight.
Raj’s Banana Leaf clarified that social media posts on the purported identity of the restaurant’s shareholders are “untrue and incorrect”.
“The individuals named therein are not and have not been nor associated with the shareholders of our company and/or restaurants,” it said in its latest statement posted on its Facebook account, without specifying who the individuals were.
“Further, whilst we acknowledge that Datuk Wira Lee Chong Wei was previously a director of the company, he had resigned from his directorship prior to the said incident and he was in any event not involved in the day to day operations of our restaurants,” it added.
“We the management of Raj take full and unequivocal responsibility for the said incident on 28-05-2018.
“Once again, we sincerely apologise to all our customers and the public for our failings and we have taken immediate action to address and rectify these deficiencies and shortcomings in our operations,” it said.
A video that was shared online previously had shown what appeared to be the restaurant’s employees washing dishes using puddled water beside a drain.
Yesterday evening, Raj’s Banana Leaf posted an apology on its Facebook account over the incident that it said was done by newly-recruited staff, asserting that such an incident “has never happened before” and said that it will not recur.
Earlier today, Kuala Lumpur City Hall’s (DBKL) Health and Environment deputy director Chandrakant Patel said Raj’s Banana Leaf in Bangsar will be closed until further notice due to hygiene violations.
Chandrakant said the restaurant had an A-grade rating as it had previously passed cleanliness evaluations, but said the outlet’s hygiene violation was due to its lack of proper dishwashing facilities.
