JITRA, May 29 — The relevant agencies and departments have been mobilised to help flood victims in Kulim, said Kedah Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir.
He said many of the victims had been evacuated and were given early aid by the Department of Social Welfare (JKM).
“We have acted fast to identify areas involved, even at night to see the situation on the ground and to evacuate the victims to certain schools if necessary.
“So the initial assistance has been given, but we need to look at the assistance needed by the flood victims, including homes affected, and we have mobilised government agencies to provide help as soon as possible,” he told reporters during a ceremony to handover contributions to imams and mosque officials in the Kubang Pasu district here, today.
Also present were Kubang Pasu MP Datuk Amiruddin Hamzah, who is also state finance, state-owned companies, industry and investment and religious committee chairman.
A spokeswoman from the Civil Defence Force (APM) in Kulim when contacted said that as at 1pm, more than 400 victims from almost 150 families were placed in nine flood relief centres, compared to 65 families reported early this morning.
The district was hit by floods following inclement weather the last few days.
Meanwhile, in Perak, Kerian District Disaster Management Secretariat chairman Mohd Sabli Bakri said the cause of flooding in several villages in the district was due to the heavy downpour upstream of Ijok, Selama and Pondok Tanjung over the past few days.
“The water level had risen up to 0.7m and entered the homes of the residents and forced them to be evacuated to relief centres,” he told reporters at SK Changkat Lobak here today, where 38 victims from six families have been placed since yesterday. — Bernama
