GEORGE TOWN, May 12 — Penang DAP chairman Chow Kon Yeow will likely be the new Penang chief minister after Lim Guan Eng was named finance minister today.
Lim, who had held the chief minister post for two terms, had on several occasions named Chow as his successor.
“Awaiting official confirmation tomorrow,” Chow told Malay Mail when contacted.
Two-term deputy chief minister II P. Ramasamy said Chow is the likely candidate for the position.
“This will be decided by the party leadership but it is likely that Chow will be the new chief minister. We will see during the swearing in this Monday,” he said.
Ramasamy remained coy as to whether he would continue as deputy chief minister II for the third term.
“I hope I will remain as the deputy chief minister II, we will see,” he said when contacted.
He said the state exco lineup will only be decided after the swearing in of the new chief minister.
The state secretary has issued an invitation to the media for the swearing in ceremony of the Penang chief minister before the Penang Yang di-Pertua Negri on Monday morning.
The invitation did not state the name of the person who will be sworn in as the new chief minister.
Penang is expected to appoint a new chief minister along with a new deputy chief minister I.
Former deputy chief minister I Datuk Rashid Hasnon was shifted to contest in another state during the elections, leaving the post vacant.
Ramasamy said the deputy chief minister I position is under PKR so it will be up to the party to decide.
So far, speculation is rife that Pantai Jerejak assemblyman Datuk Saifuddin Nasution will be appointed deputy chief minister I.
Today, some Penang PKR youth groups issued statements voicing their support for one-term state exco Afif Bahardin to be appointed as the deputy chief minister I.
