KUALA LUMPUR, May 5 — Umno was right to expel two former leaders who campaigned for the Opposition, said Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein.
The senior Umno vice president added that the decision to sack Tun Daim Zainuddin and Tan Sri Rafidah Aziz after both featured in Pakatan Harapan’s campaign was only logical.
Both former ministers were automatically expelled while Tan Sri Rais Yatim is under investigation.
“Which party will allow their members to share the same stage as the opposition and hurl abuses at their own party? Even if action has not been taken, I would myself ask that the three be sacked,” Hishammuddin was quoted as saying by theSun today.
“By their actions, it is clear that they are not with us. So I am not apologetic that they were given the boot, because it's a fair and appropriate action against them.”
Speaking at a press conference at Felda Chempelak Barat in Segamat, Johor, Hishammuddin added that the three were undermining Barisan Nasional’s chances in the general election, which cannot be tolerated.
Umno secretary-general Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Mansor earlier told reporters that the three former ministers were sacked yesterday, but later clarified that Rais remained a member and was under investigation.
All three have spoken out against Umno and Barisan Nasional, with Daim and Rafidah actively campaigning for Pakatan Harapan in the election together with Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
All three were ministers at one time or another during Dr Mahathir’s administration.
