KUALA LUMPUR, May 2 — Sungai Besar Umno division head Datuk Jamal Yunos said he would give out a Mercedes-Benz C200 as the grand prize at the third installation of his “concert”.

This is despite the police report lodged against him for “vote buying”.

Online news portal Malaysiakini reported Jamal had not yet set the time and venue for the “concert” before polling day on May 9, but said a sponsor had already been secured.

“I’m not sure whether it will be held in Sungai Besar or Sekinchan.

“I don’t dare announce the time and place as there is yet to be a formal letter from the sponsor, but the grand prize will be a Mercedes-Benz C Class C200,” he said at a press conference in Sekinchan today.

Jamal had on Monday held a free concert with free food, and a chance to win a motorcycle and RM25,000, in his attempt to woo the voters of the fishing village away from DAP.

He had also promised them RM2,000 each if Barisan Nasional (BN) wins the state seat, in which he claimed had come from 13 “successful” companies owned by fishermen who wanted to show their gratitude to BN for helping them out.

A DAP member then lodged a police report yesterday, claiming the handouts were akin to vote buying.

Undeterred by the police report against him, Jamal said today he was confident the authorities would take action against him if he had committed an offence.

“Let them (critics) lodge 1,000, or 2,000 reports, I have no issues (with that).

“What is important to me is getting to know voters with (BN’s) candidates.

“There is not even 10 sen from the candidate, from BN, Umno or other BN component parties (given out to voters). It is all from sponsors,” the news portal quoted him as saying.

Adding that Malaysia is a democratic country, Jamal dared the Opposition candidates to come to his “concert”, saying: “But they have to take the risk, as the thousands who are present will be BN supporters.”
