IPOH, April 28 — The nomination centre for Ipoh Timor parliament was “taken over” by Pakatan Harapan (PH) candidates and supporters early this morning.
At 8.20am, PH candidates — Wong Kah Woh, Howard Lee, Jenny Choy and Abdul Aziz Bari — arrived with some 200 supporters.
Carrying party flags, the group was in high spirits as they sang and chanted.
As of 8.30am, Barisan Nasional candidates had yet to be seen at the nomination centre.
Meanwhile, the usually quaint town of Sungai Siput was flooded with supporters in blue, green and white marching to the Kuala Kangsar Municipal Hall.
They gathered at their respective division office and also at the streets near the hall as at around 7.30am to show their support to the candidates.
The candidates gradually started to file their nomination papers at 9am to contest for the parliamentary and two state seats — Lintang and Jalong — under the constituency.
In Gopeng, nomination day started peacefully here as a quiet precursor to the fiery contests that are expected to erupt here over the next 11 days.
As early as 7am, hundreds of BN, Pakatan Harapan and PAS supporters thronged the roads leading up to the Dewan Seri Kinta nomination centre in Gopeng’s matriculation college.
As of 9am, no clashes or arguments broke out as the crowd managed to express their raucous support without antagonising each other.
Three state seats come under the Gopeng parliamentary constituency: Simpang Pulai, Teja, and Sungai Rapat.
All, with the exception of PAS seat Sungai Rapat, are held by PKR.
Among the four seats, Sungai Rapat is expected to be the most exciting as former allies Radzi Zainon (incumbent) and Amanah’s Datuk Seri Nizar Jamaluddin face off.
They will be joined by BN’s Datuk Hamzah Kasim, while speculation is rife that former PPBM vice president and Umno veteran Datuk Hamidah Osman could join the fray as an independent.
All of the BN, Pakatan Harapan and PAS candidates have arrived at the centre and are currently completing the nomination process.
