AYER HITAM, April 26 — Johor DAP chief Liew Chin Tong said he is taking the risk of running in Ayer Hitam as he did not have the desire to remain an Opposition lawmaker.
In a rally address, he said his victory here would propel Pakatan Harapan’s bid to win the general election, which would allow the pact to implement the necessary reforms to Malaysia.
He said he was “bored” of being an Opposition MP now as their attempts to highlight issues with the ruling Barisan Nasional in Parliament were not entertained.
“I think if Najib wins and is elected PM again, I would lose interest in being an MP because I will not have an opportunity to bring benefit to the people,” he said when referring to BN chairman Datuk Seri Najib Razak at PH’s maiden ceramah in Ayer Hitam last night.
About 400 people attended the event held in front of Johor Parti Amanah Negara’s office at Taman Perdana, Ayer Hitam.
Aside from national matters, Liew said Opposition lawmakers were also sidelined on local issues.
“The Jalan Batu Pahat road, notorious for fatal accidents in the area, required at least RM80 million for upgrades such as road dividers, street light installations and road widening which has been brought up since the 9th Malaysian Plan over a decade ago.
“Yet nothing is done. Bear in mind this is an area under the service of a ministerial elected representative (Datuk Seri Wee Ka Siong) and the government’s budget for this year is RM280 billion … so why is it unachievable?” he said.
Liew is challenging Wee in Ayer Hitam.
