PETALING JAYA, April 21 — Former DAP member Hew Kuan Yau, or “Superman” Hew, has again caused controversy with a profanity-laden rally speech criticising press coverage of DAP’s Nga Kor Ming bid for Teluk Intan.

Members of the public were upset by Hew’s denouncement of Chinese newspapers’ reportage on Nga’s plan to defeat Gerakan president Datuk Seri Mah Siew Keong for the Perak seat.

In an online video posted by DAP’s Rocket TV of the rally, Hew is shown swearing repeatedly in Cantonese as he addressed an audience that included children.

“Don’t they understand the issue? They are intentionally cheating the people,” he said in between the epithets.

One audience member approached Hew and gesticulated angrily, prompting Hew to respond.

“I’m not talking about you. Don’t be noisy,” Hew said, before members of the audience also started shouting at each other.

The ceramah is understood to have been in Bercham, Ipoh last week.

Responding to the clip, Mah’s political secretary, Ivanpal S. Grewal, said the behaviour was part of the “Opposition-sanctioned hate campaign against the government”.

“That is because they (Opposition) have run out of issues to complain about. So they are inciting voters to go against Barisan Nasional, especially MCA and Gerakan,” he said.

Known as “Superman” for his fondness for wearing T-shirts with the superhero’s crest at DAP events, Hew stirred controversy for allegedly playing up racial issues at a ceramah in Batu Kitang during the Sarawak state election in 2016.

Hew resigned from DAP later that year, following the backlash generated by his controversial Facebook post supporting China’s claim to the South China Sea, but continues to feature prominently at its events.
