IPOH, April 20 — A group of 53 non-governmental organisations, calling themselves Jaringan Bersatu Sahabat Perak (JABAT), has condemned the selection of academic Abdul Aziz Bari by DAP to contest in Perak during the 14th general election.
Its spokesman Mohd Ishraqi Sulaiman claimed that Aziz had disrespected the monarchy and insulted the palace and Selangor Sultan.
“He is involved in several controversies where he was reported as saying that going against the Sultan was not a crime.
“He also issued a statement that denied the Sultan from naming the mentri besar,” he claimed.
Ishraqi claimed the acts were against the Rukunnegara, royal institution and Federal Constitution, but did not elaborate why.
“He was rejected in Selangor for his rude attitude and now has to go elsewhere to be an elected representative.”
“If the people in his home state have rejected him, why is DAP putting him here as a candidate?” he asked.
Asked what would happen if DAP were to refuse to drop Aziz, Aminuddin replied: “We will have a meeting to decide on the next move.”
Aziz’s candidacy was announced on Thursday by DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng during a rally at Wisma Chin Woo here. He will contest the Tebing Tinggi state seat.
