KUALA KANGSAR, April 18 — DAP’s Dr Tan Seng Giaw was dropped as a candidate by his party because he spoke ‘the truth’ about 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB), Datuk Seri Najib Razak said today.
He said Dr Tan was dropped as the Kepong candidate, a seat he has held for eight terms, as he spoke the truth regarding 1MDB.
“This is what happens to someone who told the truth on 1MDB and refused to toe the party line,” the caretaker prime minister said today.
“Where is the democracy in a party purportedly championing democracy,” he said.
Najib was speaking at a meet-and-greet event held at Dewan Jubli Perak here today that was attended by some 5,000 Umno members from Lenggong, Kuala Kangsar, Sungai Siput and Padang Rengas.
Najib said as vice-chairman of the Public Accounts Committee, Dr Tan had found no discrepancies in the sovereign fund.
“But that is the DAP which cannot take criticism. The leaders do not take it well if people go against them,” he added.
Segambut incumbent MP Lim Lip Eng will contest the Kepong seat in GE14.
Malay Mail had previously reported that Tan was rumoured to have fallen out of favour with the party leadership because of his criticism of the Penang government in managing environmental issues.
He also said in 2016 as Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee vice-chairman that Najib should not be held accountable over 1MDB’s dealings.
