PETALING JAYA, Feb 28 — Police have arrested six members of a rim stealing gang that has been active for the past one month in Sekinchan today.
Sabak Bernam police chief Superintendent Nor Azmi Isa said police received a report from a 62-year-old retired clerk claiming his Perodua Kelisa’s tyres were stolen overnight and replaced with bricks on Sunday.
“The victim had parked his car in front of his house under a makeshift garage on Saturday evening before realising the tyres were missing in the morning,” he said.
Nor Azmi said the six suspects, including a woman aged between 25 and 51, operated in pairs to steal rims by targeting abandoned cars as well as vehicles parked in dark areas, alleys, non-gated porches.
All six were detained with the stolen rims and tyres in a series of raids from yesterday evening until this morning.
He said the suspects used a hydraulic jack to lift the vehicle before escaping with the tyres and replacing them with cement bricks.
“The suspects then sold these stolen rims to secondhand car accessory dealers, with the profit split half between the both parties.
“The overall profits range between RM300 and RM1,200,” he said.
Police have managed to solve at least 11 cases of rim theft involving the gang.
