PETALING JAYA, Feb 6 — Online goods seller Yus Amina Mohd Zawizah, also known as “Kakak Hello Kitty”, claimed she never intended to sell her infamous Hello-Kitty-inspired clothing, not even for half a million ringgit.

A WhatsApp conversation between Yus Amina, 27, and a potential buyer went viral over the weekend when the self-proclaimed businesswoman appeared to offer a bright-coloured set of bajus printed with the Japanese cartoon character for RM500,000.

“I’m really really interested in buying,” the message read from the unidentified prowler.

Tail between her legs, Yus Amina replied:

“If I set the price at (RM)500k one set baju Hello Kitty, would you agree?”

The buyer immediately backed down, explaining it was simply too expensive.

Yus Amina took to Facebook this afternoon to clarify the situation, saying the exorbitant price was actually set to fend off potential buyers.

“You do not understand why I put such a high price,” she wrote, slamming criticism from social media users.

“The dress is not for sale as I am wearing it.”

Yesterday, she told news portal mStar that hiking up the cost was better than explaining why she was reluctant to sell.

“Many people ask about the price, so it’s easier to tell them the price... If they are really Hello Kitty fans, they can afford the cost,” she said.

This was not the first time Yus Amina’s money-making exploits created headlines.

The merchant, known better by her profile page name ‘Kakak Hello Kitty’, claimed to have turned down multiple offers for Hello Kitty costumes which were first seen worn by her family during Hari Raya last July.

She claimed one ‘Datuk’ even offered a blank cheque for the outfits, but she initially refused to sell citing sentimental value.

Four months later she appeared to cave in however, selling six Hello Kitty baju kurungs in one transaction to the tune of a staggering RM50,000.

Yus Amina told the press she was persuaded to sell to a woman known only as Hajah NN, who claimed her daughter studying overseas wanted to add the dresses to her boutique collection.

It is unclear who or where the clothing is produced, although Yus Amina does trade Hello Kitty skincare products under the company name ">Afina’s Beauty Secret.

Say what you like about the enterprising individual, she sure knows how to create demand in the market!
