JOHOR BARU, Feb 3 — Lim Kit Siang’s recent call for voters to register two weeks before the general election reeks of “political desperation”, a Johor Barisan Nasional MP said today.
Pulai BN division chairman Datuk Nur Jazlan Mohamed said Pakatan Harapan is now desperate in their quest to win the upcoming general election.
“Their fear is that many opposition supporters may refrain from voting after Pakatan Harapan announced former premier Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad as the prime minister’s candidate.
“As for the DAP, their strategy which is hoping for the Chinese tsunami will also not happen as voters from the community have begun to lose confidence in the opposition after being cheated in the previous general elections,” he said at a parliamentary-level event in Taman Bukit Indah here today.
Yesterday, Lim called on the Election Commission (EC) to have an emergency meeting to introduce the system where an eligible voter can register to vote in the GE14 two weeks before going to the polls.
He also said he had raised the matter in Parliament 20 years ago, and asked why Malaysia could not do so when New Zealand could accommodate voter sign-ups as late as a day before the polls.
