IPOH, Feb 1 — The Mufti of Perak, Tan Sri Harussani Zakaria, today proposed that the state government make the necessary amendment to insert the establishment of the Shariah Court in the Perak Constitution.

He also said that the provisions of the Shariah Court should be extended to enable non-Muslims to attend hearings and that the court should not be confined to Muslims.

“The amendment can raise the Shariah Court to be on par with the Civil Court. The Shariah Court should also not be regarded as an entity being outside the institution of the judiciary, thus placing it in a lower position,” he said in a statement here.

Harussani’s statement comes in the wake of the Federal Court landmark decision allowing an appeal by kindergarten teacher M. Indira Gandhi to nullify the unilateral conversion to Islam of her three children by former husband Muhammad Riduan Abdullah. — Bernama
