KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 30 ― The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) yesterday detained former senior administrative officer of the International Council for Scientific Union Regional Office for Asia Pacific (ICSU-ROAP), under the Academy of Sciences Malaysia (ASM), over alleged abuse of power, graft and misappropriation of funds.
According to a source from MACC, the 44-year-old man was detained with his friend, aged 57 at a condominium here at 11.30am.
The former officer was believed to have falsified a signature to obtain ASM's approval to carry out a programme, organised by ICSU-ROAP.
“The officer who was appointed on a contract basis since 2008 was alleged to have abetted his friend in misappropriating funds amounting to RM3 million from 2012 to 2017.
“While his friend impersonated a professor and a scientist from a local university representing the country at a programme organised by ICSU-ROAP overseas,” the source said when contacted here.
The former officer was believed to have falsified the signatures of ICSU-ROAP director and programme manager on claim documents to implement 73 programmes within the country and abroad.
MACC Investigation Department senior director Datuk Simi Abd Ghani when contacted confirmed the arrest and said the case was being investigated under Section 18 of the MACC Act 2008.
The former officer would be brought to the Putrajaya Magistrate’s Court tomorrow to seek a remand order to facilitate investigations, he added. ― Bernama
