PONTIAN, Jan 23 — Tanjung Piai incumbent MP Datuk Wee Jeck Seng will contest the federal seat again in the 14th general election, MCA announced today.
Party president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai also revealed that Wee’s special officer Tan Eng Meng will be MCA’s pick for the Pekan Nenas state seat.
Wee and Tan were present at the event, together with Johor MCA leaders Datuk Tee Siew Kiong and Chia Song Cheng. About 200 party members from the Tanjung Piai division attended the event.
Liow explained that there was a need for MCA to introduce their candidates early to better prepare the party for the coming general election.
“For the party, Wee is committed and has worked hard for the people of Tanjung Piai. His efforts has also received positive feedback from his constituents,” he told the media after the event.
On the Pekan Nanas state seat, Liow said MCA has recommended Tan to stand as candidate and his name has been selected by the Barisan Nasional (BN) leadership.
“What is important is that MCA has a solid team in Tanjung Piai and we believe that the locals support us,” he said.
Wee, a two-term parliamentarian and former deputy minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, stood as Tanjung Piai MP after winning the seat during the 12th general election in 2008.
The 53-year-old Tanjung Piai MCA division chief, who is also the Labuan Port Authority chairman, had also served as a one-term Pekan Nenas state assemblyman back in 2004 to 2008.
For Tan, he is currently a Pontian municipal councillor and Wee’s special officer. This will be his first time contesting a state seat.
The 55-year-old is also the Tanjung Piai MCA division’s vice-chief and was previously its youth chief.
The Pekan Nenas state seat is currently held by DAP’s Yeo Tung Siong who won the seat from MCA in 2013. He won with a majority of 2,669 votes.
