KUALA TERENGGANU, Jan 6 — The flood situation in Terengganu continues to improve with two evacuation centres at Kampung Shukor community hall and Pasir Raja community hall in Dungun ceasing operation yesterday afternoon.

Currently, only Kemaman district is still inundated with an increase in the number of affected victims to 2,338 comprising 564 families, from 1,953 comprising 464 families this morning.

“High-tide is expected tonight (Friday) in Kuala Kemaman and there may be an increase in the number of victims at midnight and early in the morning if there is an overflow in more residential areas tonight,” said Terengganu Civil Defence Force director Lt Col Che Adam A Rahman.

Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Bukit Mentok has the highest number of flood victims with 843 comprising 189 families.

The number of flood victims sheltered at the Kemaman Municipal Council Berlian hall has also increased to 299 (83 families). There are currently 504 people (126 families) staying at SK Seri Iman.

The relief centre at SK Chukai recorded a decrease, to 140 people (37 families); similarly at Kampung Batu 14 Mosque, to 10 people (three families), Felda Seberang Tayor civic hall, 175 people (47 families) and Kampung Ban Ho surau in Air Putih, 18 people (three families).

Other centres remain unchanged, namely Pulau Tempurung surau (105 people from 18 families), Haji Othman surau in Kampung Seberang Tayor Hulu (60 people — 17 families), Lubuk Megat evacuation centre (23 people — four families); Kampung Pasir Gajah (12 people — four families), SK Binjai (84 people — 17 families) and Batu 14 community hall (65 people — 16 families).

Meanwhile in Kuantan, the flood-affected areas in Pahang have now increased to eight districts; however, the number of flood victims decreased to 7,566 as of 10 pm compared to 7,988 this afternoon.

According to the Welfare Department Infobanjir portal, all victims were housed at 50 centres with Temerloh becoming the latest disaster hit district.

“Kuantan continues to record the highest number of victims with 6009, housed at 32 centres, while Pekan recorded 1,278 in seven centres, at SK Merchong Jaya (548), Sekolah Sinar Mutiara Sungai Miang (414); SK Permatang Keledang (224); Kampung Menchupu community hall (65), Kampung Pulau Manis PPS (13); SK Temai (12); and two people at Kampung Tebat hall,” according to the portal.

In Bera, four centres were in operation, at SK Kuala Triang (71), SK Charuk Puting (24), Kampung Mengakarak Mosque (18) and Kuala Bera Mosque (13).

In Maran, 40 victims were sheltered at Kampung Baru Pertanian hall (31) and SK Pesagi (nine), while in Temerloh, 17 victims were evacuated to two centres at Surau Kampung Lompat (11) and SK Telok Ira (six).

Three other districts still have one centre opened, the Jerantut Ferry hall housing 26 people in Jerantut, and in Lipis 10 people are sheltered at the Bukit Kota hall while in Rompin, 60 people are staying at Rekoh community hall.

In Kuala Lumpur, the National Disaster Management Agency in a statement yesterday night said a total of 10,604 flood victims were recorded by the National Disaster Control Centre in Johor, Terengganu, Sabah, Pahang, Penang, and Perak as at  9.15pm yesterday with 2,924 families being housed at 72 relief centres. — Bernama
