KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 1— Six members from a Malaysian tour group were arrested at the Hong Kong International Airport, carrying with them nearly HK$4 million (RM2 million) worth of ketamine, the South China Morning Post (SCMP) reported.
The daily reported that the arrest is the first of such in decades, after the initial capture of Malaysians for drug trafficking about 10 years ago.
“More than 8kg of suspected ketamine was found strapped to the bodies of four of the six men,” SCMP reported, quoting a source with knowledge of the case.
“The haul had an estimated street value of HK$3.9 million,” the source reportedly said, adding that an initial investigation showed that the drug was for local consumption.
SCMP reported that the six male travellers aged between 18 and 28 were intercepted for inspection at the airport’s customs clearance section upon their arrival from Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday.
According to the report, the six Malaysian men were still under detention as of yesterday afternoon and had not been charged.
In Hong Kong, trafficking dangerous drugs into the city carries a maximum penalty of life imprisonment and a HK$5 million fine under the Dangerous Drugs Ordinance, SCMP reported.
