KUALA LUMPUR, June 6 — PAS members are not squabbling over who should be the Opposition's candidate to be prime minister, Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang has highlighted.
The PAS president said his party was not concerned over the matter, and asserted that members would accept whomever the party endorses.
“Everybody is surprised, why has PAS been quiet? All of the PAS members and supporters have not being troubling themselves trying to pick a candidate either to be a village chief, assemblyman, parliamentarian or even a PM candidate,” he said in a statement.
He stressed that PAS was committed to its Islamist principles and would not seek positions of power.
Pakatan Harapan parties are under pressure to name their pick to be PM following open disagreement over the matter.
They previously identified Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim as their choice and PKR attempted to reinforce this during its recent annual assembly by having Pakatan Harapan leaders hold placards endorsing him for the post.
PPBM chairman Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad refused to display placards touting Anwar as the “seventh prime minister”, however, and later confirmed that he did not support his former deputy for the post.
The incident has triggered further discord within the informal pact comprising DAP, PKR, Amanah and PPBM.
