KOTA BARU, June 1 — No new cases of bird flu (H5N1) was reported in Kelantan for the past 64 days said the Veterinary Services Department (VSD).

In a statement issued today, VSD said to date, 36 locations had been confirmed positive with the outbreak involving six districts, namely, 15 locations in Kota Bharu, six in Pasir Mas, five in Tumpat, six in Bachok, three in Pasir Puteh and one in Tanah Merah, involving 51 premises.

“A total of 56,953 birds and 17,531 eggs were disposed during a culling exercise. To monitor the situation, 3,792 samples were taken from 647 breeders,” it said adding that through roadblocks carried out at four strategic locations, 23,689 vehicles were inspected, with 61 raids involving 286 birds.

The public need not worry about consuming egg and chicken sold in markets as they are produced from states that are free from the outbreak.

On March 15, the state government declared the H5N1 outbreak as a state disaster following the death of free range chickens infected by the virus in Kampung Pulau Tebu, Tunjong, here on March 6. — Bernama
