KUALA LUMPUR, May 23 — Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said tonight the National Transformation Programme (NTP) had successfully brought the country out of the middle income trap experienced in 2010.

The NTP has also recorded admirable achievements in that it has narrowed the gap toward attaining the high-income status to 18 per cent today against 33 per cent in 2010.

“In actual fact, the implementation of the NTP by the government is significant in raising the income and purchasing power of the people,” said the prime minister when launching the National Transformation Programme Annual Report 2016 prepared by the Performance Management Delivery Unit.

He said to date, the country had achieved a per capita Gross National Income (GNI) of US$10,010 (RM42,908) compared with US$8,230 achieved in 2010.

“In the past six months, the estimated per capita GNI for developed countries stood at US$12,272,” added Najib. — Bernama
