KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 17 — A brother of convicted serial rapist Selva Kumar Subbiah wants his family’s privacy to be respected, after their address was circulated on social media.
Asok Kumar Subbiah was upset, when met yesterday, as people had gone snooping around his neighbourhood in Selayang, and snapped photos of his house and shared them on Facebook.
He said his family had been through enough, and they did not need to face the media or the public lurking outside their house.
“He is not here; my brother is not staying here,” said Asok Kumar.
“Our privacy has been ‘raped’ by the public. How would you feel if you had people coming to your house, snapping photos of it and posting it on social media in a bad light?” he asked.
“Would you like that? My wife and daughter don’t need this stress and fear of people coming to the house.
“This is my house and people around here know me. Do you know how embarrassing it is to have people posting a picture of my house on social media stating things that are untrue?”
Earlier reports had said Selva Kumar would return to his former hometown of Penang after he returned to Malaysia from Canada on Feb 7.
He was imprisoned for 25 years on numerous sexual assault charges in Canada.
Asok also said their mother was sick and although she was not in Kuala Lumpur, she would be affected if word got out that the public was looking for more information about Selva.
“Please stop coming to the house. My brother has been freed by the police, what more does the public want?” he asked.
Asok said that Selva would meet the press in the future, but as of now, he requested for the public to respect their privacy.
Selva Kumar is now in Malaysia after spending 24 years in a Canadian jail.
