GEORGE TOWN, Oct 1 ― About 2,500 Umno youths from Perak, Penang, Kedah and Perlis gathered at the Gurney Drive roundabout here to call for the resignation of Lim Guan Eng as Penang Chief Minister.

Umno Youth vice-chief Khairul Azwan Harun said the gathering which was organised by Penang Umno and several non-governmental organisations proved that youths rejected the DAP leadership in Penang.

“I urge Guan Eng to resign as chief minister. I do not understand why he loves his post so much when Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is the opposition de-facto leader from behind the prison bars,” he said in a press conference held after the gathering.

He also urged the police not to allow the Bersih rally planned for Penang because it would disrupt public peace.

He said the Bersih rally would cause trouble and had negative repercussions, especially on traders.

He added that if Bersih held its rally in Penang, Umno Youth would retaliate by organising one too.

Penang Umno Youth head, Rafizal Abdul Rahim said a ‘Bangkit’ gathering would be held on Nov 19 as a reaction to Bersih.

The 30-minute gathering today dispersed after the police urged them to do so.

Timur Laut District Police Chief ACP Mior Faridalatrash Wahid when met after the gathering said police would investigate the gathering under Section 9(5) of the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012 as no prior notice was given to the police to hold it.

Mior also said no application had been received from the organisers of Bersih 5.0 to hold the rally in his district.

Meanwhile, Penang Police Chief Datuk Abdul Ghafar Rajab said an application letter was received from Bersih Chairman Maria Chin Abdullah to hold a rally in Penang on Nov 19.

“We have asked the organisers to deal with the district police and explain the purpose of the rally as well as the desired location,” he said when contacted today. ― Bernama
